It's no secret that there are an incredible number of collagen products out there, and it can be a bit of a jungle to find out what best suits your needs and wallet. I (Thomas, Co-Founder) was in the same situation myself back in 2020 where, for various reasons, I was looking for a collagen supplement that would meet my high demands for functionality, purity, and sustainability. Finding a biodynamic collagen supplement was not impossible, so I had to find an organic alternative that lived up to the same animal welfare, ethics, and agricultural practicality.
I quickly wrote off using fish collagen - as I did not have much confidence in how even sustainable fishing was practiced and its effect on the ocean's ecosystem. Some collagen supplements from cattle were not organic, and it was unclear where the raw materials came from. It came back to haunt me when I quietly learned that most companies that sell collagen powder do not have direct quality control with raw materials and production and have never had contact with the supply chain and production their collagen powder goes through.
The companies get large manufacturing companies to produce their collagen powder without ever holding a fish, marrow bone, or piece of skin in their hands. It may seem that these companies are just a hollow shell of marketing whose only focus is glowing and resilient skin. I became increasingly frightened by how standard collagen powder is manufactured in giant factories using chemicals and techniques that burden our environment unnecessarily.
When I talk about standard collagen powder, I am talking about ultra-processed, white, and easily soluble powder, which is very far from how we initially extracted collagen. The modern production of collagen is a good example of humans becoming too clever for themselves and that a good idea – utilizing a by-product – goes too far. The collagen industry has sacrificed functionality and sustainability for ease of use and the ability to support the beauty industry.
