Why choose Functional Future?

Functional Future is the story of two childhood friends who, in 2017, from widely different upbringings and core values, had one thing in common – to end the lack of transparency and mediocrity of the food industry.

Our advanced powder is meticulously formulated with a scientifically documented high collagen and hyaluronic acid content. We ensure unparalleled precision in measuring the key components contributing to the product's efficacy by utilizing state-of-the-art techniques such as FTIR and HPLC. Setting a new standard in quality assurance, our supplement undergoes rigorous third-party testing using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to certify its absence of heavy metals. This advanced analytical method guarantees a level of purity that meets the stringent criteria for optimal safety and efficacy. Diverging from conventional production methods, our supplement is characterized by its absence of enzymatic and chemical processes. This distinction ensures the preservation of the molecular integrity of collagen and hyaluronic acid, maximizing their bioavailability and functionality.

Underpinning our commitment to excellence is the direct oversight of our product by both our internal quality control measures and the scrutiny of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (FVST). This dual-layered approach guarantees the highest standards are maintained throughout the production cycle.

Scientifically crafted to be non-allergenic and easily digestible, our supplement stands out compared to conventional dairy and plant-based protein powders. This distinction makes our product scientifically superior and a practical and well-tolerated addition to diverse dietary preferences.

Compared to plant-based protein powders, the product has high amounts of certain amino acids, including glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. The Functional Future Bone Broth powder is non-GMO certified and has been third-party GMP tested and certified for the absence of heavy metals. The product is, by definition, an upcycled product that would otherwise be discarded, as other companies do not know how to utilize the valuable bone matrix raw material efficiently. This makes our side-stream production of Bone Broth Collagen a product that has a unique environmental and sustainable profile. The packaging is completely compostable and biodegradable. The product is mainly produced with electricity from Nordic biogas plants. Our products do not contain preservatives or additives.

What is the problem with the standard collagen industry?

It's no secret that there are an incredible number of collagen products out there, and it can be a bit of a jungle to find out what best suits your needs and wallet. I (Thomas, Co-Founder) was in the same situation myself back in 2020 where, for various reasons, I was looking for a collagen supplement that would meet my high demands for functionality, purity, and sustainability. Finding a biodynamic collagen supplement was not impossible, so I had to find an organic alternative that lived up to the same animal welfare, ethics, and agricultural practicality.

I quickly wrote off using fish collagen - as I did not have much confidence in how even sustainable fishing was practiced and its effect on the ocean's ecosystem. Some collagen supplements from cattle were not organic, and it was unclear where the raw materials came from. It came back to haunt me when I quietly learned that most companies that sell collagen powder do not have direct quality control with raw materials and production and have never had contact with the supply chain and production their collagen powder goes through.

The companies get large manufacturing companies to produce their collagen powder without ever holding a fish, marrow bone, or piece of skin in their hands. It may seem that these companies are just a hollow shell of marketing whose only focus is glowing and resilient skin. I became increasingly frightened by how standard collagen powder is manufactured in giant factories using chemicals and techniques that burden our environment unnecessarily.

When I talk about standard collagen powder, I am talking about ultra-processed, white, and easily soluble powder, which is very far from how we initially extracted collagen. The modern production of collagen is a good example of humans becoming too clever for themselves and that a good idea – utilizing a by-product – goes too far. The collagen industry has sacrificed functionality and sustainability for ease of use and the ability to support the beauty industry.

What is so special about our Nordic Bone Broth Collagen?

I (Thomas, Co-founder) felt like I had to boil and drink my Bone Broth forever and forget about having a convenient collagen product that I could use when I didn't have Bone Broth in the fridge. However, that was until Frederik and I were awarded a so-called INNObooster together with the Danish Technological Institute, where we received EUR 200.000 to develop the most functional collagen powder from Danish biodynamic and organic marrow bones.

The project lasted over a year and a half, and we learned an incredible amount about our products. So much so that today, we have a unique and innovative collagen powder that we can vouch for both functionally and sustainably. The product would never have become a reality without Frederik's indomitable drive and technical ability. Ultimately, he had to rebuild our kitchen in Denmark to include a 2.5-ton heavy bone crusher and large 600-liter stainless steel tanks so that we could make optimal use of the raw materials and create a possible product for the general consumer to buy.

Ultimately, however, we had to abandon making the product exclusively from Danish biodynamic marrow bones - as the raw material base was too small. Still, we have found in Danish and Swedish organic farmers an alternative we can live with, are proud of, and far better than what already exists in the collagen jungle. Our Nordic collagen powder allows you to use a quality product that can boost your hero's journey towards well-being and well-being so that you can ensure that your loved ones thrive.

An innovative and sustainable product

The organic Bone Broth liquid made before drying is made from free-range Nordic and grass-fed cattle from sustainable agriculture. The Bone Broth liquid is then carefully reduced to powder via spray drying. The boiling and spray drying process has been specially developed together with the Danish Technological Institute to preserve functional molecules such as collagen and hyaluronic acid while controlling factors such as temperature, cooking time, pressure, flow rate, and raw material concentration. Denmark's Innovation Fund under the INNObooster program financed the project for approximately two years. You can read more about the development of the product and the good results here in collaboration with the Technological Institute (at the time, we were called ØkoLyst).

The specially optimized manufacturing process ensures a high content of protein, collagen, and essential amino acids in an easily absorbable form while preserving the hyaluronic acid that is typically destroyed by excessive heat. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and makes up over a third of all tissue. This protein is essential for skin, hair, connective tissue, tendons, muscles, and more. The product is easily digestible and well tolerated by everyone. In manufacturing, we achieve a molecular weight for the collagen peptides of around 8 kDa (kilodaltons). This may provide advantages compared to smaller collagen peptides in terms of reduced degradation and, thereby, longer exposure in the gastrointestinal system. However, the collagen peptides will probably be broken down to a molecular weight that provides both effective absorption and exposure.

Why is Hyaluronic acid the missing key?

Hyaluronic acid, also known as "nature's best lubricant", is a disaccharide with a chemical composition that makes it easy for water molecules to bind. It acts as a humectant, meaning it helps bind water to the body's cells. It's great for keeping skin and synovial fluid hydrated, an important beauty benefit regardless of skin type.

Product mixability and hyaluronic acid

Our production of the collagen powder is based on Bone Broth liquid; the hyaluronic acid content depends on the season, origin of raw materials, and drying parameters. Therefore, you will be able to experience that the powder can change solubility occasionally. This is not a sign that there is something wrong with the product. The batches with high concentrations of natural Hyaluronic Acid will be difficult to dissolve and have a higher tendency to clump. The positive aspect of the lower solubility is the higher content of hyaluronic acid, and one must consider whether the solubility can be disregarded in exchange for the hyaluronic acid. However, the problems are only seen when the product is dissolved directly in cold water and partly in hot water. If you use the product in smoothies, baked goods, cooking, etc., where the product is stirred - this is not a problem. Should you not be satisfied with using the product, our 100% satisfaction guarantee always applies, and you will get your money back, no questions asked (link).

We continuously work to ensure a product that is both soluble and has a high functionality - but it is a difficult balancing act, as we do not want to use additives.

The difference between Bone Broth liquid, powder, and capsules?

To make our collagen powder, we have simply taken neutral Bone Broth liquid and gently dried it into a Bone Broth powder. It is thus all the functional properties from Bone Broth condensed into a convenient and taste-neutral powder.

However, it loses part of the hyaluronic acid in the manufacturing process to powder, and you should therefore choose our liquid Bone Broth if a high concentration of hyaluronic acid is important to you. Our liquid Bone Broth (link) has the flavor of vegetables and herbs and will also add more umami to dinner dishes, etc. - so this is also an argument for choosing the Bone Broth liquid. However, most people combine the two products so that the collagen powder is taken daily and then supplemented with liquid Bone Broth a few times a week. Our Bone Broth Collagen powder in capsules gives you and your family an easy way to take your collagen supplement. We recommend taking our Bone Broth collagen powder if capsules are not important to you, as you get more collagen powder for your money. The literature supports daily portions of collagen between 2.5 – 10 g, depending on your needs - so both capsules and pure powder are good alternatives to each other.
