Why organic bone broth collagen powder?

Functional Future Nordic Bone Broth Collagen with Hyaluronic Acid (link) is 100% dried Bone Broth. The content comes from grass-fed and sustainably raised cattle on Nordic regenerative pastures.

We always use minimal processing and carefully selected raw materials of the highest quality. Our Bone Broth Collagen powder is organic, grass-fed, sugar-free, and low in fat.

Collagen with hyaluronic acid is the ideal supplement to a varied and balanced diet. With this product, you can enjoy the benefits of the combination of collagen and hyaluronic acid in a practical and sustainable way.

Our advanced powder is carefully formulated with a documented high content of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Using analytical techniques such as FTIR and HPLC, we ensure precise measurement of the most important components.

Our products undergo third-party testing with ICP-MS to ensure the absence of heavy metals and to meet strict safety and efficacy requirements. Without the use of enzymatic and chemical processes, we maintain the molecular integrity of collagen and hyaluronic acid, maximizing their bioavailability and functionality.

  • Documented content of:
    • Protein (96%) by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
    • Collagen from types 1, 2, and 3 by FTIR
    • Hyaluronic acid by liquid chromatography (HPLC)
    • Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline (compared to plant-based protein powders)

What is the problem with the collagen industry?

It's no secret that there are an incredible number of collagen products out there, and it can be quite a jungle to figure out what best suits your needs and budget. I (Thomas, Co-Founder) was in the same situation back in 2020 when, for various reasons, I was looking for a collagen supplement that would meet my high demands for purity and sustainability.

It was impossible to find a biodynamic collagen supplement, so I had to find an organic alternative that met the same animal welfare, ethics, and agricultural practices.

I quickly ruled out using fish collagen – as I had little confidence in how even sustainable fishing was practiced and its effect on the marine ecosystem. There were some collagen supplements from cattle, but they were not organic, and it was not very clear where the raw materials came from.

I was very surprised when I slowly realized that most companies selling collagen powder do not have direct quality control over raw materials and production, and have never had contact with the supply chain and production that their collagen powder goes through.

Companies get large production firms to produce their collagen powder without ever having held a fish carcass, marrow bone, or piece of skin in their hands. It can seem to one as if these companies are just an empty shell of marketing whose only focus is glowing and firm skin.

I became increasingly alarmed by how standard collagen powder is manufactured in gigantic factories using chemicals and techniques that unnecessarily burden our environment.

When I talk about standard collagen powder, I'm referring to ultra-processed, white, and easily dissolvable powder, which is very far from how we originally extracted collagen.

Modern collagen production is a good example of how we humans become too clever, and how a good idea – namely, utilizing a side-stream product – goes too far. The traditional collagen industry has sacrificed sustainability for user-friendliness and the ability to support an insatiable beauty industry.

I had a feeling I would have to boil and drink my Bone Broth forever and give up on having a convenient collagen product I could use when I didn't have Bone Broth in the fridge.

However, that was until Frederik and I were awarded a so-called Innobooster together with the Danish Technological Institute, where we received 1.3 million DKK to develop the most sustainable collagen powder to date, based on Danish biodynamic and organic marrow bones.

The project lasted over a year and a half, and we learned an incredible amount. So much so that today we have a unique and innovative collagen powder that we can vouch for in terms of both content and sustainability.

The product would never have become a reality without Frederik's unwavering determination and technical skills. In the end, he had to convert our kitchen in Herlev to accommodate a 2.5-ton bone crusher and large 600-liter stainless steel tanks so that we could optimally utilize the raw materials and create a product that was accessible to the average consumer.

*The image below shows our upgrade from 35-liter pressure cookers to a 600-liter pressure cooker, which makes the process easier for us, the product cheaper for you, and saves resources.

In the end, however, we had to abandon making the product exclusively from Danish biodynamic marrow bones – as the raw material base was too small. But we have found an alternative we can live with, are proud of, and which is far better than what already exists out there in the collagen jungle, thanks to Danish and Swedish organic farmers. Our Nordic collagen powder gives you the opportunity to use a quality product without worry.

An innovative and sustainable product:

The organic Bone Broth liquid produced before drying is made from free-range Nordic and grass-fed cattle from sustainable farming. The Bone Broth liquid is then gently reduced to powder via spray drying.

The cooking and spray-drying process has been specially developed in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute to preserve molecules like collagen and hyaluronic acid while controlling factors such as temperature, cooking time, pressure, flow rate, and raw material concentration. Denmark's Innovation Fund under the INNObooster program funded the project for approximately two years.
You can read more about the product's development and the excellent results here in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute.

The specially optimized manufacturing process ensures a documented content of protein, collagen, and essential amino acids in an easily absorbable form, while preserving hyaluronic acid, which is typically destroyed by excessive heat.

The bones in both our Bone Broth (liquid) and our Bone Broth Powder are pressure cooked for approx. 4–5 hours.

The most important thing is not actually the "cooking time" itself, but the method: We use pressure cooking, which allows for efficient extraction in a shorter time. This also means we can avoid unnecessarily long heat exposure and thus better preserve hyaluronic acid and collagen, which can otherwise be damaged by very prolonged heat.

When making bone broth at home, you often end up with 16+ hours because you typically don't use pressure or finely chop the bones in the same way we do.

And as an added reassurance: The short pressure cooking we use also does not create the same conditions for histamine development as long home cooking – this is supported by our histamine tests.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, making up over a third of all tissue. This protein is crucial for skin, hair, connective tissue, tendons, muscles, etc. The product is easily digestible and well-tolerated by everyone. Through our manufacturing process, we achieve a molecular weight for the collagen peptides of approximately 8 kDa (kilodaltons).

This can offer advantages compared to smaller collagen peptides in terms of reduced degradation and thus prolonged exposure in the gastrointestinal system. However, the collagen peptides will likely be broken down to a molecular weight that provides both efficient absorption and exposure.

Compared to plant-based protein powders, the product has large amounts of certain amino acids, including glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. Functional Future Bone Broth powder is certified as non-GMO and has been third-party GMP-tested and certified for the absence of heavy metals.

The product is by definition an upcycled product, as our company possesses unique knowledge on how to utilize valuable bone matrix raw material that would otherwise go to waste. This makes our side-stream production of Bone Broth Collagen a product with a unique environmental and sustainable profile.

The packaging is completely compostable and biodegradable. The product is primarily produced with electricity from Nordic biogas plants. Our products contain no added preservatives or additives.

Solubility and hyaluronic acid:

Hyaluronic acid, also known as "nature's best lubricant," is a disaccharide with a chemical composition that makes it easy for water molecules to bind.

Our collagen powder production is based on Bone Broth liquid, whose hyaluronic acid content depends on the season, raw material origin, and drying parameters. Therefore, you may find that the powder's solubility can vary from time to time.

This is not an indication that there is anything wrong with the product. Batches with a high concentration of natural Hyaluronic Acid will be harder to dissolve and tend to clump more than batches with a lower concentration.

The positive aspect of lower solubility is the higher content of hyaluronic acid, and one must consider whether to disregard better solubility in exchange for more Hyaluronic Acid. However, these issues only arise when the product is dissolved directly in cold water and partially in hot water.

If you use the product in smoothies, baked goods, cooking, etc., where the product is stirred, this is not an issue. If you are not satisfied with the product's use, our 100% satisfaction guarantee always applies, and you will receive a refund without questions (link).

We are continuously working to ensure a product that is as user-friendly as possible – but it is a difficult balance, as we do not want to use additives. The product is also available in capsule form, so you avoid solubility problems.

Subscription and delivery:

Remember to take advantage of our very beneficial subscription scheme where you save 30% on your first purchase and then 15% by signing up (link).

Application:

1 tbsp. (5 g) twice daily (10 g). Add to shakes and cold or hot drinks and can be used in both savory and sweet dishes (e.g., smoothies, soups, stews, and juices).

Since the product contains hyaluronic acid, which can easily clump, stir thoroughly (whisk/blend). The powder can withstand high heat. For best before date and batch number, see the bottom of the product. The taste is neutral, and there are 25 daily doses per product.

Content per daily dose:
Dried Bone Broth powder: 1000 mg, Collagen: 8100 mg, Hyaluronic acid: 40 mg
Unopened, the shelf life upon delivery is 1.5 - 2 years, depending on the production date. Shelf life of 180 days after opening.

Typical amino acid profile per 10 grams:

What is the difference between our Biodynamic Bone Broth liquid and our Organic Bone Broth Collagen powder/capsules?

To produce our collagen powder, we simply took neutral Bone Broth liquid and gently dried it into a Bone Broth powder. It is, therefore, Bone Broth condensed into a convenient and flavor-neutral powder.

However, we lose some of the hyaluronic acid in the manufacturing process, so you should choose our liquid Bone Broth with a high hyaluronic acid concentration if this is more important than collagen. Our liquid Bone Broth (link) is flavored with vegetables and herbs and will add a higher degree of umami to dinner dishes, etc. - so this is also an argument for choosing the liquid Bone Broth.

Most people, however, combine the two products so that the collagen powder is taken daily, supplemented with liquid Bone Broth a couple of times a week. Our Bone Broth Collagen powder in capsules provides you and your family with an easy way to take your collagen supplement.

We recommend taking our Bone Broth collagen powder if capsules are not important to you, as you get more collagen powder for your money. However, the literature supports daily servings of collagen between 2.5 – 10 g, depending on your needs – so both capsules and pure powder are good alternatives to each other.
